As a teacher, my most satisfying experiences have been when students are able to see themselves in a different light. When students think outside the confines of habits and rituals, they can truly begin to challenge themselves as artists. It is my responsibility as a teacher to provide a safe environment for student self-discovery.
I strive to produce intelligent dancers by incorporating kinesiology and somatics into my technique classes. By laying a strong foundation of body mechanics, students are able to move safely with full abandon while exploring qualities of dynamics, space, momentum, direction, and musicality. While teaching technique and theory is vital to dance training, so is the importance of fostering the unique talents of each student. Open dialogue between teacher and student is essential in helping students develop the language tools necessary to effectively communicate their concerns and experiences with what is normally a physical, non-verbal activity.
I believe in using the transformative nature of improvisation and authentic movement to awaken student curiosity. I believe in creating an environment where students are able to take calculated risks and be courageous, dynamic, passionate dancers reveling in the joy of movement. Finally, I believe in leading by example as I continue to cultivate my own unique voice and find innovative ways to communicate through movement.
